My church, Wave Church, Leon Fontaine, Senior pastor of Springs Church in Winnipeg, Canada, come conduct their relationship seminar. I heard him deliver four different messages over the two days he was here and they all where amazing. As a result, my family purchased a large portion of his resource materials, one of which is entitled Ideal Mate Material.
In this series, designed for young singles, he talked about several things in relation to future spouses, one of which was the qualities people should be on the lookout for in future spouses. He outline that they should:
1. Passionately pursuing God, not a spouse.
2. Understand God’s love and righteousness. (Have self-worth.)
3. be full of real joy (not just “funny”).
4. Be generous (One aspect of which is to give their 100% to their spouse, without looking for a return. Agape love)
5. Have moral and set guidelines that he or she will not crossed.
6. Know God’s plan for his or her life. (Or at least know the general direction)
7. Desire to grow and change.
He made the point that if these are the things that people should be looking for, they should also be the things people are working to improve in their own lives as well. He went much deeper into these things, yet this is a very general outline. Even though I believe I have a few years left before I will began pursuing a relationship like this, I very much agree with Fontaine’s assessment as for the qualities we should be looking for in a future spouse. Of course I believe there are many other things to be watching for when looking for a spouse, such as a similar understanding of the Bible, Politics, and common calling, yet I believe these are a pretty good starting foundation.
