Giuliani

So yesterday I heard Mayor Rudy Giuliani. As could be expected, his presentation of himself and his message was excellent. He chose to spend the majority of his time talking about leadership, some thing he knows a thing or two about.

He outlined six principles of leadership:

No. 1 - know what you believe;
No. 2 - always be an optimism;
No. 3 - courage;
No. 4 - relentless preparation;
No. 5 - value of teamwork and of the team;
No. 6 - being able to communicate it to others.

Throughout the points, he used examples to illustrate his point, as for one he recalled moment from 9/11. He also invoked the memory of Ronald Reagan much. Throughout it all, believe he did a great job of highlighting his strength as a strong national defense and free market candidate. He was also very personable. You found yourself drawn to him and really wanting to root for him. Overall did his presentation change my overall perception of Rudy? Not really, but I enjoyed the opportunity to listen to a man who along with our President provided so much leadership and strength when our country needed it most.

Cliffhanger

So some friends and myself went Rock Climbing two Friday ago at the Rock Gym. We try to do it periodically and as normal it was a lot of fun! Rock climbing to me is so much more than physical. To be able to climb you of course need some physically strength, but I believe more than that you need mental strength. The primary thing that I see is that to be able to successfully climb, you must be able to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Sometimes to get a handhold, you have to temporally put yourself in a position which could cause you to fall. You also have to be able to overcome any doubts or fears about your ability to climb, otherwise you will talk yourself out of reaching the top.

There are also times when you must push yourself farther than you thought you could. When climbing a wall, opportunities will be presented to give up and stop, yet if you do, you will wonder whether you could have reached that next handhold. The only way you can feel satisfied is to either fall trying...or reach the top.

Which Superhero are you?

So I took this "personality quiz". Haha, ya, it is not your typical personality assessment, but I like it. I actually took it a couple months ago as well and it is interesting to see the differences in the results. This is my most recent one.

This is my old one:

My core strength has remained the same (Superman), but I have really increased in my Flash characteristics. I believe it is because I have been going to the gym more ;-).

Moving Forward!

I am so excited about the future of my church and how we are moving forward! For those of you who do not know, I go to Wave Church. We have just begun the building of our Wave Convention Center and as a result have move back into one of our smaller building for the time being. Despite that, we are planning for growth! We now offer a service Saturday night at 5:15pm, as well as a 8:00am, 9:30am, and 11:30am on Sunday. We also have two Sunday evening services at 5:00pm and 7:00pm! Even Soul Central, our amazing young adult ministry, is looking at going to two times on Wednesday nights! It is all around amazing!

Awesome Weekend

I had such an awesome weekend, yet at the moment I do not have time to write about it (I must be off to work!). So I will give you this amazing quote:

"This is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." - Winston Churchill

Standing out

Insight 4

4. Just because you know everyone in the room is staring doesn't mean you are not suppose to be there.

When I first started going to the gym, I felt out of place. I would look around and see all these people who where fit and or looked like they knew what they were going. I on the other hand, felt like everyone knew just by looking at me that I was a beginner at this. Simply, it was awkward.

Many times, God calls us to do things that are awkward to us and if we allow that sense of awkwardness to hold us back, we will miss out on all He has for us. Awkward comes because God is calling us to do something we have never done before. If I had allowed my awkwardness to cause me to stop going to the gym, I would have missed out on all the benefits of working out I have experienced. Rather than awkwardness being the sign that we should stop something, more times than not, it is the sign we are doing something we have never done before...we are growing. I once heard it said that if you never do anything that is awkward, you have ceased to grow. Never stop growing. Or in the words of Patton as immortalized in the 1970 movie Patton:

Now there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We're not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're not interested in holding onto anything -- except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose, and we're gonna kick him in the a--. We're gonna kick the hell out of him all the time, and we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose!

You've Got Mail

Most of you probably have to check your Regent email like I do by using the online webmail program. This can be done by either going to webmail.regent.edu or my.regent.edu. There is also one other, lesser known address by which you can assess your webmail.

Paul.regent.edu

That is right, every time I need to check my mail, I just go paul.regent.edu :-D

Eye of the Tiger

Insight Three:

3. Be aware of the background noise.

Some people may find this corny, but I sometimes work out to the Rocky IV Soundtrack (which by the way is an AWESOME soundtrack!). When I hear some of the songs, I can see Rocky in my mind totally pumping iron. This motivates me to push beyond my current limits like few other things can.

I have also had the experience when I did not have my iPod, and thus my beloved Rocky IV, I was beginning to experience some problems leg pressing a weight I had previously pressed. As a result, I had decided that I would press less that day until I looked over and saw another guy I knew. I knew that he sometimes worked out at this gym, but had never seen him there before. See him there motivated me to move pass the weight I had decided to press towards reaching the original weight.

Both music and people can be a powerful motivation at the Gym. It can seriously allow you to push past self-imposed limits and cause you to rise higher. The same is true for your spiritual developments, and life in general. So the question comes to mind, what are you allowing to go into your head? Are you in an environment that is positive and uplifting, motivating you to reach towards the things of God? Or are you in an environment where people are always talking about life's problems and or are discouraging you from becoming all that God has called you to be?

You and I have each been called to achieve tremendous things, but we will never achieve them if we allow ourselves to reside in an environment that is constantly tearing us down. Sometimes we can not control the work environment, but we can most assurdly control the circle of friends we keep and the things we put into our heads. Are the friends you keep encouraging you to follow God or are they always sowing seeds of doubt and failure? Solomon in Proverbs (12:26) wrote, "The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray" (NKJV). Even if they are not "wicked", if they are not leading you towards your destiny, you should seriously reconsider the time you spend with them. As assuredly as music and people have an effect on our Gym performance, so does our environment on our spiritual and physical lives.

So in the words of the Rocky IV song:

In the warriors code
There's no surrender
Though his body says stop
His spirit cries - never!
Deep in our soul
A quiet ember
Know it's you against you
It's the paradox
That drives us on
It's a battle of wills
In the heat of attack
It's the passion that kills
The victory is yours alone

Going Arnold

Already, Insight Two of my Spiritual Insight from the Gym

2. If you're not Arnold, don't try to lift like Arnold...yet.

Many of us have done it. We have decided that we were going to get fit, so we went to the Gym and found the biggest weighs we could to start out on. Either two things happened after that. First, we woke up the next morning totally sore and unable to work out for a week...or we utterly collapsed under the weigh right there at the Gym! What was the problem?!

As most who have spent anytime at the Gym know, strength does not come in one or two sessions at the Gym. Really, it does not come in a week or two, but after months of disciplined visit to the Gym building up our strength. You start out small, lifting low weigh and over a period of time increase the weigh. By the end of a month or two, you are lift more than when you started and your body can routinely handle it without you becoming incredibility sore.

The same is true for Faith. So many people decided, "Hey, I am going to try this faith stuff" and believe for something that is outside of their "lifting ability". Then after a week or two of believing and seeing no results, they quit and say faith doesn't work. It was not that faith didn't work, but rather that they tried to go Arnold in a week when they should have started out believing for something they truly could envision. Faith just like strength comes after repeated victories. You start out believing for money to pay the week's bills and after it comes to past, you have the confidence to step out even further to paid for the bills and believe for car to replace your junker. Strength takes time and Faith takes time, but who knows, if you work out your faith you could go from believing for the salvation of your friend to the salvation of hundreds of millions like Billy Graham. God has given every believer the measure of faith (Romans 12:3), but it is up to you and I to decided how much it will be developed.

Spiritual Insights from the Gym

So I have been having an idea for a series of posts. The series will be, "Spiritual Insights from the Gym". Haha, what a man title right?!

First, I want to explain a basic premise that is the foundation for my observations. The premise is that principles and natural laws, such as sowing and reaping, are really mirrors of greater spiritual principles and spiritual laws. So with that, lets move to Insight One!

Insight One: By making physical fitness a long-term priority that is a nonnegotiable, fruits of physical fitness follow.

I have developed a weekly routine of going to the gym twice a week for an hour and a half. In my life, it has reached the point were my doing those two sessions is a nonnegotiable. It does not matter what else is going on, I will always make time to go to the gym. As a result, I am continually reaping the benefits of working out. Regardless of what is going on in my life, whether it be school related or work related, I am continually developing and reaping the benefits of developing my physical strength.

How many of us though have made spiritual development, spending time with God and His Word, a nonnegotiable in our own lives? So many of us, I included, have often in the past put God aside saying, “I’ll read my Bible tonight” or “I must do this instead”. We do this, but then wonder why we feel spiritually underfed or weak. It is because we have failed to make spiritual develop a nonnegotiable that we will do regardless of whatever else we have going on in life. Until we make spending time with God a nonnegotiable, we will not experience benefits of beings spiritually fit. Ultimately, our spiritual develop will dictate how well we life our lives, so just like it is important to be physically fit to live well, isn’t it more important to be spiritually fit?

Thrill seekin!

For those of you how have read Lenny's blog, you know that Lenny, myself, and some of my boys from church hit BG yesterday. It was totally AWESOME.

As it worked out, we chose to go to BG the same day that Tropical Depression Berry flew over Williamsburg. Apparently that was enough reason for 80% of the normal visitors to decide to say home from BG. For us, that was all the more reason to go. When we got there, it wasn't even raining. Really, it only rained for a short periods of time throughout the day. So that = really short waits and five really stoked guys! The longest wait for us the entire day I believe was for the front line of Griffin...15 minutes.

To say the least, we had a blast! Rain days are the best (As long as you are not afraid of getting pelted by rain at seventy miles an hour on a coaster ;-) !
